Wellness and Cardiac Rehabilitation

Cardiac rehabilitation is a program designed to restore individuals following cardiac surgery, acute myocardial infarction, coronary interventional procedures, or those with angina pectoris or multiple coronary risk factors, to their optimal physiologic, psychosocial, and vocational level. A major goal is to prevent the progression or reversal of the underlying atherosclerotic process by modification of risk factors including smoking, hyperlipidemia, hypertension, diabetes mellitus, obesity, sedentary lifestyle and Type A behavior.

There are four phases of cardiac rehabilitation. Phase I is the hospital inpatient period designed to mobilize patients out of bed and introduce education material for risk factor modification. Phase II is an outpatient, 12 week, monitored program staffed by a multi-disciplinary team consisting of physicians, nurses, exercise physiologists, dietitians and counselors. Phase II is based primarily on exercise with a strong emphasis on education and stress management with a direct goal of lifestyle behavioral changes. Phases III and IV are maintenance programs with less supervision and indefinite duration to help ensure long term compliance.

Benefits of cardiac rehabilitation include improvement in exercise tolerance and cardiovascular fitness, improvement in psychological well being, smoking cessation, weight control, improved blood pressure, diabetes control, and improved lipid profile.

Cardiac rehabilitation programs are considered extremely safe with very minimal risks of complication. The time, effort, and commitment to a cardiac rehabilitation program will pay off in modifying the life long effects of atherosclerosis.
